Chicken Pullet - Ready to Lay
"Ready to lay" pullets are young hens (~6 months old) that are about to begin their egg laying careers. These girls are ideal for expanding your flock or starting a new egg laying team. Pullets are $44 each and available for on farm pick up each summer. We will contact you once we receive your order to schedule a pick-up date.
Laying hens begin their egg production at about 6 months of age, and continue to produce well for 2 - 3 years. We sell ready-to-lay chickens (aka pullets) early each summer. We feature a different breed each year. In 2018, we're raising New Hampshire Reds, which have a broad chest and reddish color. These are a newer, larger and more prolific offshoot of Rhode Island Reds, one of the classic laying breeds. Pullets should lay 250 - 300 eggs per year. Their large size makes them a good dual purpose (meat) bird. For optimal egg production, hens should be exposed to warm colored light (sunlight is best) at least 12 hours per day. Chicken feed should be nutritious and constant. Give hens access to free choice oyster shells and trace minerals. Remember, chickens NEED grit! During winter, or if your birds don't have access to an outside dirt or gravel area, provide them with free choice sand or grit, or mix it with their feed. If you're on a budget, fine and coarse sand from a clean local beach is an option.
